Patriotism put to context

flag.jpg

Suddenly while watching this movie “Lions of Punjab” it put me into a dilemma whether I can call myself a country – loving Indian, a patriot or I have become to educated, too liberal, too global and insensitive to my belongingness to a country. There are lot many thoughts like this which I am sure many have shared at different points of time or rather been too busy to actually realize.

The point in the movie which provoked my thought was a scene were a person of foreign origin was about to sing the national anthem. Thought the immediate reaction might be that he being a foreigner knows the Indian anthem by heart and can I actually sing it from start to end? I easily dodged the question – It’s a movie and that actor was made to memorize it by heart and take was finalized after more than dozen repetitions – see it was easy. But the actual point of surprise came when the director of the movie had to specifically mention (though under a disguise of a pun) – “Yes! He is going to sing the anthem. So please stand up “.

RGV ki AAG - remake of sholay ? Joking?

RGV ki AAG

After whole day of Office - Tired , Frustrated and hungry two of us went to watch this movie. We knew that the reviewers have torn this movie apart. But for some strange reasons Gunda happened to the favourite movie of my campus. So i thought may be two of us can have a good laugh and tried our best to find the movie hilarious.

And Guess What ? We left the hall cause we could not resist laughing and risked heart stroke each.

The pathetic song sequences, funny mindless imitations of an epic movie and supposed gr8 personalities looking so kiddish - really hilarious.

Ram Gopal Verma ki AAG - In term I can guess ke this aag was initiated by act of insanity contagious enough to rope in great acclaimed actors like Ajay Devgan and Sushmita Sen. Why i left Amitabh Bachchan out? I think he is a great actor without any class . Money ke liye wo kuch bhi karega - and apne bete se bhi karwayega. Buy one and get the other free.

There are some Movies where the Directors owe public apology to the crowd and should refund the money along with some compensation to each of the viewers. No prizes for guessing that this movie was right there. I thought Ek Challis ke Last Local was the last such movie. But Here Was the AAG.

The whole point of claiming it to be a remake of Sholay was nothing but a publicity stint. Nothing more than that. It also tried to copy some snippets of the movie and some odd bit of music. But this movie couldn’t even flirt with the glory of RAMPUR KE SHOLAY. Read more

What do I read from my SIM Cat Scores?

Simulated Cat Exams referred as Mock Cats or SIM Cats - They are nothing but simulation of testing environment and just a personal feedback nothing more. It doesnt by any chance tell you whether you are going to crack CAT or not. This is a very popular notion where people scoring good in Sim Cats are always looked upon as sure “crackos” and those you dont are “give ups”.

Its not bad to score good in sim cats neither its that bad to score bad in sim cats. They are just feedbacks which point out to you areas of improvement rather than answering the million dollar question “what should i have done to crack CAT ? “.

Let me tell you real story. There were two friends ( I am one of the characters and the other being my childhood friend) . Both were neck to neck in their preparations for CAT. By an large their score used to be really close and it was a even game over a span of such simulated exams. Sometimes he used to score over me , sometimes I used to score over him. On real difficult ones without any loose sections, we used to score exactly the same. So, according the sim cat trends the destinity for both of us should have been the same. ? But it didnt happen that way. I went to IIM Cal, he went to XIMB for his MBA. Read more

My article on Rediff: On my CAT experience

The Common Admission Test, one of the most competitive exams in the country, is nothing but an aptitude test — it tests your intelligence, sharpness, presence of mind and ability to handle pressure. There are 1,60,000 aspirants vying for 1,200 seats, which makes it 133 students per seat. I have always believed CAT is a test of character; this cannot be developed by mugging for hours as you can do for some other exams.

Though I opted to join a CAT coaching centre due to family pressure, I have always believed CAT does not differentiate between those who have been trained for it and those who haven’t. On the contrary, CAT aims at identifying those who can appear for the exam on any given day and still come out with flying colours.

The day before: November 20, 2004

decided to unwind and get rid of all the anxieties and expectations I carried with myself as I prepared for CAT. No more SimCats, no course materials to be seen, no formulas to be revised. On second thoughts, Read more

We Belive our country is great but only in Retrospect

If i ask people walking on the roads ” Are you proud of this country ? ” . The reaction will most probably be guided by a confirmist attitude - which says that the person who says”no” is not a patriot. Rather I choose to ask “what makes our country great ? “.  Most of the answer dates back to the origin of civilisation , some claiming us to the oldest civilisation, some say the most peaceful, land of brave freedom fighters, noble laureates etc. etc. The point is that we define greatness because of events in the past which we now defines as feats . Its rarely a case where people believe that India is a great country because of what she is today.

India is a country with a considerable impact on the Read more
